What Your Should Do Before and After a Massage

There are many factors to think about when it comes to getting a massage. In order to get the full benefits of a spa treatment, it is important to remember a few things about your actions before and after. Our Lead Massage Therapist, Kristine, shares with us her best tips on how to enjoy your massage to the fullest while also reaping the benefits.

Preparing for Your Massage:

How can I get in relax mode?
Start the relaxation process before stepping inside the massage room by taking a warm shower. Not only will this relax your mind but also relax your muscles. A warm shower will help relieve tension during the massage and your cleanliness will also put you at ease.

When should I eat?
It’s a good idea not to eat prior to a massage. Eating prior to a massage may leave you bloated and uncomfortable to lay on your stomach. Leaving at least two hours prior to massage without eating a big meal is highly recommended.

When should I talk about prior or existing injuries?
Prior to a massage, think about what’s important to inform the therapist. Often clients are excited for their session, which sometimes makes them forget about past injuries. A client will say they feel fine until they’re on the table mid-massage. Informing the therapist of any injuries or concerns about your body is crucial to maximize your health goals

When is the best time to arrive?
Make an effort to arrive early. It will not only ensure you receive the entire time allotted, it will also help to achieve your relax mode.

Do I have to talk to the therapist during the massage?
Don’t feel compelled to talk during your massage. Your massage is your time. Try to get the most of your session by taking deep breaths. Periodically taking deep breaths will lower your heart rate and blood pressure. Deep breathing promotes physical relaxation, the goal of every massage client.

Important Things to Know Post Massage:

Continue the Relaxation
Try to continue the relaxation after the massage, especially if you had some deep work. You don’t want to run the risk of injury.

Listen to Your Body
Not everyone has the same reaction when walking out of a massage room. Some clients feel invigorated while others feel sleepy. Take notice to how you feel, this will assist when making your next appointment, especially what time you should book a massage. If you feel invigorated, then book early in the day. If you feel sleepy, then try booking after your daily grind.

Eating After the Massage
I suggest to not eat a big hearty meal. Think more fresh fruits and vegetables, steamed vegetables (the more colors, the better). After a massage, your looking to replenish the mineral stores and provide a bit of protein support via vegetables or a small amount of poultry/meat.
